Instagram To Introduce Facebook-Like Algorithm

Instagram announced today that it will be changing the order that photos and videos appear in a user's feed to show "the moments we believe you will care about the most."

Instead of the current reverse chronological order, the new order of a user's feed will be determined by:

  • Likelihood you’ll be interested in the content.
  • Your relationship with the person posting.
  • The timeliness of the post.

 

What Could It Mean For Marketers?

Instagram says that it will be taking the process slowly and listen to feedback to get the experience right.  So likely the order will slightly changed with potential for less engaging posts to be pushed further down the feed in much the same way as the Facebook algorithm works.

So for businesses using Instagram organically, now would be the time to brush up on the basics of Instagram and look to update their practices for creating photos and videos that are the most engaging.  

Instagram users can expect to see the new update rolling out over the coming months.
